The Seaweed Forager is a short documentary portrait of Jayson Byles made by Northern Heart in 2023 and filmed by Natasha Hawthornthwaite. It follows him onto the East Neuk shore at low tide — the rock shelves between Elie and Kingsbarns where every East Neuk Seaweed workshop runs — and lets him explain, in his own words, what he is looking for, why he cuts rather than pulls, and what the shore has come to mean to him.
It is the best three minutes of introduction to the man and the place we can offer: the ethos of cut, never pull, the seaweeds themselves, and the rhythm of a working life set by the tides. If you are thinking about a workshop, watch this first.
